Cell cover for June 22, 2012

In this issue, Vaseva et al. (pp. 1536–1548) find that p53 activates tissue necrosis in response to oxidative stress and ischemia/reperfusion injury. p53 accumulates in the mitochondrial matrix and triggers the opening of the permeability transition pore at the inner membrane, which leads to mitochondrial rupture and cell necrosis. This process is depicted on the cover as a bursting water balloon, captured by high-speed photography. Artwork by Michael Sostarecz from Monmouth College and Eric Smith under the scientific direction of Ute Moll.
